I can't find an available provider
Waitlists are one of the most common frustrations families report. This pathway covers practical steps while you wait.
Information reviewed: August 28, 2026
Quick answer
Unfortunately, finding a provider can take time—especially for certain therapies or specialties.
Do not rely on only one provider or one waitlist.
Step 1 — Call your insurance company
Ask for an updated list of in-network providers for the specific service your child needs.
Ask:
- Which providers are currently in network?
- Can you help me locate a provider accepting new patients?
- Does this service require prior authorization?
- Do I need a referral?
- Are telehealth options covered when appropriate?
Step 2 — Contact several providers
When appropriate, join more than one waitlist.
Keep a simple list containing:
| Provider | Date contacted | Waitlist | Follow-up date | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example Therapy Center | Aug 28 | Yes — joined | Sep 12 | Asked about cancellation list |
Step 3 — Ask better availability questions
Instead of only asking, “Are you accepting patients?”, ask:
- Are you accepting new patients for this specific service?
- What is the current estimated wait?
- Do you have cancellations?
- Can I join a cancellation list?
- Are other locations available?
- Do you offer telehealth when clinically appropriate?
- Do you accept my exact insurance plan?
Step 4 — Check trusted directories
Depending on the service, families can use:
- Their insurance provider directory
- PerformCare’s CSOC Provider Directory for applicable CSOC services
- Autism New Jersey’s referral resources for autism-related services
- Existing Vicabell verified resources
Vicabell provides educational resource information and is not affiliated with the State of New Jersey, PerformCare, or the Children’s System of Care. Program requirements, contact information, and services can change. Always confirm current information with the official agency.
