Respite means temporary relief for a primary caregiver.
For families of eligible children with intellectual or developmental disabilities, respite may be available through New Jersey’s Children’s System of Care Family Support Services.
Step 1 — Check DD eligibility
For children under 18, developmental disability eligibility is handled through PerformCare.
If your child has not yet been determined eligible, start by learning about the DD eligibility process.
Step 2 — Understand that DD eligibility and Family Support Services are separate steps
A child being determined eligible for developmental disability services does not automatically enroll the family in respite.
PerformCare states that families seeking Family Support Services must complete a separate Family Support Services application, and services are based on eligibility, appropriateness, need, and availability.
